Volunteering with ABLE2

In Ottawa, there are more than 160,000 people with disabilities, many of whom experience barriers in their daily activities. Their families also face complex caregiving demands and financial strain.

When you volunteer with ABLE2, you can have a profound impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families, and help them overcome the barriers by:

  • Providing people with disabilities opportunities to develop meaningful relationships and build a strong network of support, which will reduce loneliness and isolation, and improve their overall mental and physical well-being,
  • Working towards equality and justice for people with disabilities, enabling a world where every individual is seen as able, important, and valued,
  • Spreading awareness about disabilities and the importance of accessibility, reducing stigma, and creating a more inclusive community,
  • Dedicating your time and skills to ABLE2 activities and fundraising initiatives that support programs and services tailored to the unique needs of people with disabilities, enabling them to build lives of meaning and joy while engaging as active members of the community.

Benefits of volunteering with ABLE2

“I’ve been volunteering with ABLE2 since 2007, and the experience has had a real impact on my life. What initially drew me to ABLE2 was its mission—to connect vulnerable and isolated individuals in our community with volunteers who can be their friends and allies. That simple but powerful idea continues to inspire me.

Being part of ABLE2—as a volunteer, a donor, and a board member—has been a significant part of my life. It’s shown me how powerful simple human connection can be, and how small acts of friendship can change lives.”

I am in Canada, but not in Ottawa. Can I still volunteer?

If you’re in Ontario, consider volunteering virtually through the Connect Friendly Callers Program. This program will match you with someone living with a disability in Ottawa for weekly phone, video, or online connections.

Will I receive training prior to becoming a volunteer?

All volunteers receive general training on topics like Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Accessibility. You will receive onboarding and training that is specific to your volunteer role, and you’ll have support from our dedicated staff throughout your experience.

I am a new immigrant; can I volunteer at ABLE2?

Yes. new immigrants living in the Ottawa–Gatineau region are welcome to volunteer with ABLE2.

Depending on your volunteer interests, some programs, such as the Matching Program and Connect Program, require volunteers to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from the Ottawa or Gatineau police services. This is a standard requirement for roles that involve working closely with people in vulnerable situations. If you have questions about eligibility, police checks, or which volunteer opportunities might be the best fit for you, please reach out to us. We’re happy to help.
